R is for our Rainbow House

Our Rainbow House is an Australian registered charity with a focus on a village on the outskirts of Lusaka, Zambia. The main activity of ORH is a school which caters for 50 children who have been identified as the most vulnerable ones in the community. The school employs 13 people, 12 of whom come from the immediate community.

My husband and I are both involved in the activities of ORH here in our home town, which is where the charity is based.

Firstly we sponsor one of the students at the school. This is a fairly new venture for us. So far all it has involved is paying the money and providing a photo of us.  However we will also be writing to her and sending her more photos of our family. It is a special thing to be involved in changing the lives of some of the most vulnerable children in our world.

Fixit Guy does the payroll for both the Zambian and Australian staff as well as dealing with matters relating to taxation, superannuation and employment contracts.  He attends the monthly business meetings of the committee. We both assist with fundraising activities here in our home town - either as workers at events as needed or as attendees when possible.

I am also involved with Handmade with Love which is a craft group that meets weekly to make items which are then sold at various craft markets and festivals around here to raise funds ORH.

Last year we made outfits for the children at the school - dresses for all the girls and shirts for the boys. We purchased shorts for the boys (we ran out of time to sew them) We also made beanies for all the students and some other residents as well.

Check out and like Handmade With Love for Our Rainbow House on Facebook. As a group we don't just work hard for the charity. We have become good friends and make sure we have fun as well.

We are always looking for things to make and sell. Please let us know if you have any suggestions.

The charity dollar is becoming harder and harder to come by and donors want to be sure that what they give is affective and goes to those most in need with as little as possible going to administration. Our Rainbow House donors can be assured that the money that they give is used to help the most vulnerable.

Our Rainbow House is a relatively small charity with a very definite focus on the school and its community. The board, which is based here in our town is very focused on achieving the best outcomes for all concerned. Financially they are very careful about what the money is spent on. All expenditures are carefully monitored and donors can be assured there is no wastage and definitely no misappropriation of funding. The local community is involved in management and decision making as much as possible and the ultimate desire is to see that the running of things eventually becomes a local concern.

If you are interested in finding out more about this charity which is so very dear to my heart check out the website and the Facebook Groups
